Our recurring events include the following:
Guided Birding Walk
Our guided bird walk is led by an experienced field naturalist and covers varied terrain through the forest, along the river and into a meadow, learning to identify birds by their songs and calls, and spot them in the foliage.
This walk typically begins in Anniversary Park and progresses along Turtle Trail, a naturalized trail, without significant inclines, but which does contain uneven ground. The pace of the walk is slow to moderate. |
Birds of Prey Show
The Canadian Raptor Conservancy provides a fascinating overview of all things raptor in this up close and personal view of eagles, hawks, owls, and vultures. A free-flying demonstration (weather and bird dependent), with an expert facilitator is an opportunity not to be missed for nature lovers of all ages as well as photographers. Three shows typically take place throughout the day.
|
Medicinal Herb Walk
Led by a local Naturopathic Doctor, this popular walk is a guided tour of common plants that are used for healing purposes. Participants learn about the history and current uses of the plants that surround us, walking on a shaded path in the forest. Recommended: comfortable footwear, insect protection and a notepad to record items of interest.
|
Mushroom Hunt
Ferguson Forest Centre blooms with all shapes, sizes, colours and types of wild mushrooms. It's a magical kingdom of fungi - poisonous, edible, rare, common, visually beautiful! Discover the forest's most striking and often delectable offerings with our expert local forager, Cheryl Rush of Edible Wild Ontario.
|
Astronomy Night
Be ready for science and fun as astronomy experts offer telescopic views of various astronomical delights such as planets like Jupiter, Saturn and Mars, the moon, constellations, the Pole Star, and other space objects of interest. Participants will learn why astronomy is important, and have their questions answered.
In the event of cloudy skies, alternate activities are planned, however our Astronomy Nights are cancelled in the event of rain. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, telescopes, flashlights and lawn chairs to best enjoy the night sky. Those with smartphones or tablets can also download apps such as Skyview or Star Walk to help identify the constellations. |
Walking Meditation
Mindfulness while walking allows us to take in everything around us, with devoted attention, without becoming focused on one particular thing. In our daily lives we move us quickly from one thing to another, in both mind and body. This is an opportunity to calm your mind and body, while taking in the sights, sounds and scents of the forest. Sharpen your senses and relax your mind by joining us in Anniversary Park as we walk and meditate along the Turtle Trail.
This is a wonderfully welcoming event for those new to meditation who want to experience it with others, while also allowing experienced participants to immerse themselves in the forest setting as part of their practice.
